junItaly’s interior minister is under pressure from opposition parliamentarians to explain the deportation to Kazakhstan last week of the wife and daughter of Mukhtar Ablyazov, a prominent dissident and former banker who is in hiding.

In December 2016 Mukhtar Ablyazov’s extradition was refused, he was released from prison and granted a political refugee status in September 2020. Earlier, a number of his relatives and associates had been given international protection in various European countries. Thus, continuing to campaign for human rights in Kazakhstan and the rights of political refugees amongst them, we consider our mission largely fulfilled.
